My Third Inktober: 31 Days of Ink, Imagination & Discovery

Inktober 2026 art challenge — join me, artist Ala Botnarescu, on my third journey through 31 days of ink drawing, creative experimentation and artistic discovery. Every October, artists around the world take on the famous Inktober challenge, created by artist Jake Parker in 2009. After participating in 2023 and 2025, I’m challenging myself once again to create one new ink drawing every day, guided by the daily prompt.

For me, Inktober is much more than a daily drawing challenge. It’s an opportunity to build discipline, develop my gel pen and ink drawing techniques, explore unexpected ideas and discover new artistic directions. As always, I deliberately avoid looking at the complete prompt list in advance — I prefer to discover each theme on the day and let my imagination lead the way.

I work on a small format and usually spend between 1-3 hours on each sketch. I see these drawings as spontaneous visual experiments rather than finished artworks—a chance to explore an idea without the pressure of getting every line and shape perfect. When I work on a larger piece, I become much more meticulous and invest far more time, precision into every detail. With Inktober, I can simply let the line flow, play with an idea and see where it takes me—and sometimes, a spontaneous sketch becomes the first spark for something much bigger.

Inktober 2026: Days 1–4 — Apple | Relic | Miniature | Cactus

Day 1. #Apple 🪱🍎 – The first day of the challenge! I created this apple drawing in my studio, where I had a little more time to work on the piece. Besides the gel pen, I also used ink for the black part of the apple on the right. It’s an apple that is being peeled from the bottom, while the worm looks panicked because it is no longer in its comfort zone.

Day 2. #Relic – The idea of a relic immediately brought to my mind an old wooden chest, the kind that opens with a key and seems to hold stories from another time. For me, the idea of inheritance took on a more imaginative meaning. I pictured a cat with nine lives, surrounded by human skulls from different generations of the same family — as if the cat itself were a living relic, carrying memories and stories through time.

Day 3. #Miniature – For this Inktober drawing, I explored the idea of the cycle of life and the emergence of human life from a microscopic universe. A new life begins in a parallel world — a life that starts at an almost invisible scale, emerging from a miniature. I enjoy using symbols in my art, and in this piece I imagined a universe filled with constellations, the Moon, and the energies of the feminine and masculine.

Day 4. #Cactus 🌵  – Here, my imagination became a little more playful. The word Cactus made me imagine a macho cactus in a flower pot — a hot Latin American cowboy with a hat, sunglasses, self-confident and a mysterious attitude, his hair blowing in the wind. But don’t get too close… he also has some seriously long spines. His love might just burn! 😂

Inktober 2026: Days 5–8 — Smack | Ogre | Panic | Stinky

nktober-2026-days-05-08-gel-pen-drawings

Day 5. #Smack – An abstract composition originating from a single point of impact, with cracks spreading outward in different directions.

Day 6. #Ogre – A mythical ogre from an enchanted forest, a creature formed from a tree trunk, raising its arms in a threatening gesture to frighten anyone who dares to enter its mysterious woodland realm.

Day 7. #Panic – A human figure clutching their head, overwhelmed by inner tension that escapes through the ears as steam, while cracks form across the chest. The entire figure is consumed by a wave of panic, capturing the moment when emotional pressure becomes too intense to contain, but it is just a state of mind.

Day 8. #Stinky -Inspired by the idea of something stinky, I imagined a pig’s snout with a nose ring, mucus dripping down from its nostrils and a foul smell rising from it. It looks as though it has been poking its snout into the dirtiest places.

Inktober 2026: Days 9–12 — Ram | Mystical | Rescue | Toss

Inktober 2026: Days 9–12 — Ram, Mystical, Rescue, Toss by Ala Botnarescu

Day 9. #Ram – This challenge caught me on the road, at an exhibition 300 km away from home! But dedication and discipline kept me from missing a single day of the challenge. I even managed to find a quiet spot at the exhibition fair to create a sketch inspired by this prompt.

Day 10. #Mystical – I’m a cat lover, and this prompt inspired me to imagine a cat in an aquarium with octopus tentacles! Isn’t she adorable? (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)

Day 11. #Rescue – This prompt immediately made me think of animal protection, because animals depend on our care and compassion, especially those in danger, neglected, or without a home. ❤️ I drew a little bird sheltered by abstract hands, symbolizing protection and the deep connection between humans and nature. We are all connected, and every living being deserves care and kindness.

Day 12. #Toss – I returned to a theme that defines me as an artist: abstract art. I drew a ball tossed from a curved, sloping surface, using abstract lines around it to convey movement and suggest its speed.

Inktober 2026: Days 13–16 — Flimsy | Lady | Hooray | Gangly

Inktober 2026: Days 13–16 — Flimsy, Lady, Hooray, Gangly by Ala Botnarescu

Day 13. #Flimsy – For this drawing, I focused more on the idea behind the artwork than on the technique itself. The concept of fragility and vulnerability is represented by a small heart being pulled apart and drained of life. A tormented heart, yet a special one (wearing a crown), that still shines and has a rainbow above it.

Day 14. #Lady – For this daily prompt, I imagined femininity, sensuality, and simplicity — a woman blossoming and knowing her worth.

Day 15. #Hooray – It reminded me of a clown who seemed to have achieved his goal, only for success to turn its back on him once again. *Try covering one half of the face at a time to discover the character’s different expressions.

Day 16. #Gangly – It was late in the evening, and I was quite tired when working on Day 16 of the Inktober challenge. Initially, I had imagined a silhouette with long arms and limbs, but then I shifted to the idea of a tree whose branches stretch high into the sky, reaching for the moon or the sun.

Inktober 2026: Days 17–20 — Contraption | Flightless | Confused | Lounge

Inktober 2026: Days 17–20 — Contraption, Flightless, Confused, Lounge by Ala Botnarescu

Day 17. #Contraption – The idea of a mechanism brought ball bearings to mind, inspiring me to create an abstract composition representing a mechanical device.

Day 18. #Flightless – Something unable to fly, deprived of the freedom of flight, inspired me to create a pair of detachable wings — one functional, the other damaged, with incomplete feathers. Behind them, at the centre, stands the small silhouette of a human figure, unable to use the wings or take flight to reach greatness. A reflection on limitations, vulnerability, and the struggle to rise above what holds us back.

Day 19. #Confused – A confused silhouette with raised hands, expressing the feeling of not knowing what to do next or which path to follow. After remaining in this seemingly endless state for a long time, the figure finally reaches a moment of enlightenment, yet struggles to adapt to the freedom of this new chapter. Although the mind remains entangled in past difficulties, nothing lasts forever. Life asks us to keep moving forward, embrace change, and remain flexible enough to find our way through the unknown.

Day 20. #Lounge – A moment of complete relaxation, something we all need from time to time. I illustrated a young woman peacefully unwinding in a bathtub, completely at ease with herself and the world around her. The bathtub takes the shape of a pea pod, and from the serenity she radiates, a tiny pea shoot begins to grow — a little touch of magic, where peace nurtures new life.
